The era of Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United may nowadays stand synonymous with success, but that hasn’t always been the case. In the summer of 1992, Ferguson had been United’s coach for six years, without a single league title to show for it. Manchester United, indeed, hadn’t won the league since the days of Bobby Charlton and George Best.
But all that was about to change. In that same summer of 1992, Ferguson spent the now ridiculously low looking sum of £1,2 million to purchase Eric Cantona from Leeds United. With his skill, flair and goals, United possessed Britain’s best team.
Tottenham Hotspur had strengthened their squad as well – paying £2.1 million for Teddy Sheringham. The same Sheringham who would later replace Cantona at United and help them win the Champions League in 1999.
